What is Misogi?

Misogi is the act of purifying oneself—cleansing worldly impurities and spiritual defilements—by using sacred water such as that from waterfalls or rivers. It is also a traditional ritual to purify both body and mind before participating in a sacred ceremony.
At Shirataki Daimyojin, the waterfall purification (takigyo) is both an offering of prayer to Shirataki-san and an important act of purification before the prayer itself.

• To reconnect with the natural world
• To offer heartfelt prayers for one’s personal wishes

Flow of the Waterfall Purification Ritual

1. Check-in
2. Inform Shirataki Daimyojin of your intent to undergo the purification
3. Change into ritual attire
4. Shout and perform a strong front punch to focus your spirit
5. Bow toward the waterfall
6. Gradually adjust your body to the cold water
7. Enter the basin and stand under the waterfall
8. Offer a final prayer at Shirataki Daimyojin

For Those Interested in Participating

• Advance reservations are required for the waterfall purification experience.
• The experience may be canceled depending on weather conditions, water levels, or other unforeseen circumstances.
• You may take photos or videos of yourself or your group, but please refrain from photographing or recording others without their consent.

Experience Fee: ¥3,500 (tax included)
Included in the fee: Guide fee, rental towel and straw sandals (zōri)

Not included in the fee:
• Jinbei rental: ¥500
• Fundoshi (loincloth) purchase: ¥800
• Hachimaki (headband) purchase: ¥200

Duration: Approximately 1 hour

Facilities: Toilets, Change Rooms
A powder room and hair dryers are also available.

Meeting Point: In front of the Shirataki Daimyojin parking lot (Activity Reception at Shirataki no Mori)
A guide will escort you to the waterfall and provide instructions for the waterfall meditation.
